Poundland could be opening a new store in Welwyn Garden City, after a planning application was submitted by the discount retailer.

Plans for external illuminated signage at the former Debenhams store in Stonehills are currently under consultation, suggesting the new store could be arriving in the town sooner rather than later.

The unit has stood empty since the department store closed back in 2020, with many residents hoping for a Wetherspoons or Primark store would take over.

A further planning application has revealed that Poundland might not be the only new tenants in Stonehills, with kitchen furniture shop Howdens also submitting plans for illuminated signage.

Above the store, new flats have already been built after an application was approved shortly before Debenhams closed.
