World premiere at Welwyn Garden City theatre

THE world premiere of a new contemporary dance theatre production will take place in Welwyn Garden City this week.
BOOKS fly off a shelf. Someone leapfrogs across a room, using bookshelves as stepping stones. Famous stories come to life and a curiously mismatched couple find true love.
Doesn’t sound much like a trip to your local library, does it?
But in C-12 Dance Theatre’s explosive new production Shhh! all this – and much more – takes place amongst some familiar hushed bookshelves.
Shhh! is a love story told over four seasons by five theatrical performers who manipulate the set and surroundings to create an innovative piece of dance theatre.
The set is mostly recycled from the New Barnfield Library in Hatfield.
Choreographer Annie-Lunnette Deakin-Foster explained: “Libraries contain a fountain of knowledge, escapism and history.
“They’re a place of social interaction and advancement, and have such exciting potential for me to create and make stories.”
And exciting is the word. If your experience of dance is someone in a tutu pirouetting delicately across a stage, prepare for a shock. There are classical elements to the choreography, alongside street dance, free running and acrobatics.
To compliment this, the music – from film and television composer Jamie Salisbury – will range from classical minimalism to dubstep, rock, trip-hop, ambient, jazz and more.
Plus, it’ll make you smile. “Humour is very important,” said Annie.
“We want it to be a show that takes the audience on an entertaining journey, with highs and lows and laughs and cries… of enjoyment.”
Add in that the performances of Shhh! at the Hawthorne Theatre, in Welwyn Garden City, will be the world premiere of the piece prior to a nationwide tour and you really have an evening of entertainment that you can’t afford to miss.
Just don’t expect every trip to the library to be as much fun as this.
C-12 Dance Theatre presents Shhh! at Campus West from Thursday, May 2 to Saturday, May 4. Tickets start at £13 (£6 for school parties).
