A successful St Albans musical theatre group is celebrating walking off with a number of awards.

The recently rebranded St Albans Musical Theatre Company (SAMTC) won a string of regional awards from the National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA).

Formerly St Albans Operatic Society, SAMTC was renamed last year to reflect a more modern approach to performing musical theatre, and subsequently scored highly in the NODA East awards.

Seven members won or received recognition for their performances and direction in recent musicals.

Steve Wilks and Debby Connor won ‘Best Duo’ for Fiddler on the Roof, while Philip Joslin was ‘Best MD’ for the same musical.

Matthew Gregory claimed first prize in the ‘Best Male’ category for Hairspray, with Claire Stanley winning ‘Best Choreographer’ for the same show.

Daniel Quirke was also runner-up in ‘Best Male’ for Hairspray, as was Clive Ogden in the ‘Best MD’ section for the musical.

SAMTC’s next productions will be Sister Act in November and Spamalot next April, both at The Alban Arena.

Tickets for Sister Act, which runs from Tuesday, November 8 to Saturday, November 12, are selling fast.

• Visit The Alban Arena’s website at www.alban-arena.co.uk/events/sister-act/ to buy tickets.
