A new musical opening in Stevenage this Easter will return to the Gordon Craig Theatre for a second run later in the year – before then heading out on tour.
The world premiere of the Gordon Craig’s new in-house production of Rapunzel will take place at the theatre in Lytton Way on Thursday, April 13.
More than 4,000 tickets for the show’s Easter weekend run have already been sold, with fewer than 100 tickets left for the production’s nine performances.
The initial run of the children’s musical based on the Brothers Grimm fairy tale closes on Easter Monday, April 17.
However, due to popular demand, creatives at the Gordon Craig have decided to bring the show back for another run in July.
Of the decision to add seven summer performances after the initial Easter dates, director and executive producer Catherine Lomax said: “Because of the theatre’s diary we can’t extend it.
“So in the last week of July, when the children have broken up from school, we will bring Rapunzel back to the Gordon Craig Theatre.
“We will have another run from the Thursday to the Sunday in the last few days of July.
“And because Rapunzel has sold so well, we are also going to take it on tour.”
With book, music and lyrics by choreographer Khiley Williams, musical director Phil Dennis and Catherine Lomax, Rapunzel will return to the Stevenage stage from Thursday, July 27 to Sunday, July 30.
Tickets are on sale now from the Gordon Craig’s website at http://www.gordon-craig.co.uk/rapunzel-i1703.
And, after those extra shows in Stevenage during the summer holidays, the musical is set to tour other venues across the country.
Catherine said: “We are hoping it will be the same cast, because we will then be embarking on a tour.
“For the first-time ever, and very excitingly, and a little nerve-rackingly, we will go on tour to various venues across the UK, finishing in King’s Lynn in the middle of September.”
Taking inspiration from the Grimm’s tale and the animated movie Tangled, the story of the long-haired Rapunzel features toe-tapping new songs and is ideal for the whole family.
Director Catherine said: “I’m incredibly excited about the set.
“I want it to be as magical as possible for the children.”
She added: “There will be a child that comes to Rapunzel that falls in love with theatre and the minute that happens my job is done.”
Early bird tickets for the summer performances cost £18, and £57 for a family of four, until April 13.
