Slumdog Millionaire (15)

Oscar success: Eight awards, including best picture, and best director for Danny Boyle

THE slums of Mumbai provide the backdrop for the latest film by British director Danny Boyle, whose previous credits include Trainspotting, 28 Days Later and The Beach.

It is based on the story of Jamal Malik, an 18-year-old orphan who is just one question away from winning the jackpot on India's version of Who Wants to be a Millionaire?

When the show breaks for the night, police arrest him on suspicion of cheating; how could a street kid know so much?

During the interrogation, Jamal explains how he came to know each answer.

As he does so, the extraordinary story of his life emerges: the slum where he and his brother grew up, their adventures together on the road, vicious encounters with local gangs, and of Latika, the girl he loved and lost.
