Milk (15)

Oscar success: Best actor for Sean Penn and best original screenplay

SEAN Penn stars in this true story of a remarkable man who lived and died for what he believed in.

Born in 1930, Harvey Milk (Penn) was an activist and politician most famous for being the first openly gay man elected to public office in the USA.

In 1977, he was voted onto the city supervisors' board of San Francisco.

But tragedy strikes the following year, when both he and the city's mayor George Moscone were shot to death by another city supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin).

This movie by Gus Van Sant (Good Will Hunting) explores the life of a man who embodied hope for a generation oppressed by what was acceptable to mainstream America.
