THE new chamber music season opens at Campus West this weekend with the exceptionally talented cellist Guy Johnston and international pianist Melvyn Tan.
The two team up at the Hawthorne Theatre, in Welwyn Garden City, on Saturday night for the first Welwyn Garden Concert Club performance of the 2011-2012 series.
A Hertfordshire boy from Harpenden, Guy Johnston first gained international recognition more than 10 years ago, when he won BBC Young Musician of the Year, coolly overcoming every string player’s nightmare of breaking a string mid-performance.
Since then he has played with many of the leading international orchestras, performed recitals at top venues including London’s Wigmore and Cadogan Halls, as well as making many recordings and broadcasts.
Guy is excited to be accompanied in WGC by pianist Melvyn Tan.
Melvyn has built a formidable reputation as a versatile keyboard player and earned worldwide acclaim as a leading exponent of the fortepiano – the modern-day piano’s predecessor.
TV viewers will have heard his dextrous playing on the famous ‘wet shirt’ production of BBC TV’s Pride and Prejudice.
Guy and Melvyn will be performing a selection of music by composers who were all great pianists: sonatas by Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Rubinstein, plus the passionate Prelude e Danse Orientale by Rachmaninov.
Tickets for the concert are just £13.50 and £2.50 for students in full-time education.
* The Hawthorne Theatre plays host to six concerts of chamber music – hot tickets for lovers of classical music – and the Welwyn Hatfield Times has teamed up with Campus West to offer a pair of season tickets worth £64 each.
