THE founder and leader of groups Spirit Level and Great Spirit will be entertaining jazz enthusiasts in Welwyn Garden City tonight (Sunday).

Herts Jazz Club’s weekly offering in the Hawthorne Studio at Campus West is the Tim Richards Trio.

Best known for his work with seminal modern jazz group Spirit Level, pianist, composer and educator Tim Richards has been active on the international jazz scene since the early 1980s.

The trio has entertained audiences from Inverness to Istanbul with a well-balanced combination of contemporary originals, bluesy grooves and swinging standards and have released three CDs.

London-based Tim’s first encounter with a piano was at the age of eight in a dentist’s waiting room.

After classical piano lessons, he began to teach himself jazz and blues from the age of 14.

In recent years, Tim has won acclaim as a composer and arranger, developing ideas in the larger instrumental setting of his nine-piece band Great Spirit.

His style has been described as “luminously funky... laced with the blues”.

Tickets for Sunday’s show in WGC cost £10 online at www.welhat.gov.uk/cw and £12 on the night.

Herts Jazz members can get in for £8 and to bring jazz to a wider audience, tickets for students and under-21s cost just £5.
