Archant

Two enduring favourites of the Welwyn Garden City rock music scene attracted a crowd of eager fans for their performances on the same bill on Saturday night.

Smash, formed at Stanborough School in the early 1990s, performed at the Green Room above The Doctors Tonic pub, after The Astronauts, who have been performing in various incarnations since the late 1970s.

Smash, fronted by Ed Borrie, who was brought up in Lemsford, were briefly the darlings of the national music press, and even appeared on Top of the Pops.

The Astronauts were as always fronted by Mark “Astronaut” Wilkins, who maintained his tradition of performing with much younger musicians.
