A multiple Brit Award-nominated singer, an American R&B superstar and a former Mercury Music Prize winning band are among the big names announced for a Hertfordshire music festival.
Standon Calling organisers this morning (Tuesday) confirmed the first acts playing the music festival this summer.
Legendary alternative rockers Suede will take to the main stage at Standon Lordship in July, as will chart-topping pop princess Jess Glynne.
Milkshake R&B star Kelis, The Hives, Everything Everything and Ghostpoet have also been announced.
The festival will take place over the weekend of Friday, July 29 to Sunday, July 31 at Standon Lordship, with Anna Calvi, Blossoms, The Thurston Moore Band, Goldie, Theo Parrish and Gold Panda also among the first additions for the ultimate overgrown house party.
Standon Calling promoters are pulling out all the stops with their first 2016 line-up announcement, unveiling a wealth of musical talent, including the mighty Suede.
The Britpop pioneers won the Mercury Prize in 1993 for their chart-topping self-titled debut album, which includes hit singles So Young, Animal Nitrate and Metal Mickey.
Following seminal second album Dog Man Star, guitarist Bernard Butler left the band in 1994.
The group then scored five top 10 hits from third album Coming Up – Trash, Beautiful Ones, Saturday Night, Lazy and Filmstar.
The band split up in 2003 following fifth LP A New Morning, but reformed seven years later.
And the current Suede line-up of singer Brett Anderson, guitarist Richard Oakes, Hertfordshire-born bass player Mat Osman, drummer Simon Gilbert and keyboardist/rhythm guitarist Neil Codling released critically acclaimed seventh studio album Night Thoughts earlier this year.
Joining Suede on the Standon 2016 bill is flame-haired Grammy winner Jess Glynne, fresh from a stellar performance at last week’s Brit Awards.
First coming into the public consciousness as the vocalist on Clean Bandit’s Grammy Award-winning number one hit Rather Be, the pop sensation has since become one of the biggest UK breakthrough acts of recent years.
Her number one charting debut album I Cry When I Laugh has now turned double platinum in the UK, making it the highest-selling debut album of the past year.
She also became the second British female solo artist after Cheryl to have five number one singles in the UK.
At the Brits, Jess was nominated for British Breakthrough Act, British Female Solo Artist and British Single for Hold My Hand.
A boutique festival with major musical ambitions, Standon Calling has also secured the services of New York singer Kelis.
Renowned for her incredible live performances, the multi-talented musician and part-time chef will be bringing all the boys and girls to the yard at Standon.
Following hits Milkshake and Trick Me, Kelis more recently featured on Calvin Harris single Bounce.
Swedish quintet The Hives, famed for their famous brand of garage rock, are also confirmed for the Hertfordshire festival, as is Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine supergroup The Thurston Moore Band.
Mercury Prize-nominees Everything Everything will no doubt have revellers in the party spirit with their genre-defying musical prowess.
Further performances come courtesy of fellow Mercury Prize-nominee Anna Calvi and winner Ghostpoet, along with anti-folk singer-songwriter Adam Green, nine-piece hip-hop group The Mouse Outfit and rising Manchester rockers Blossoms, who recently jumped to the top of the iTunes album chart.
Flying the flag for electronic music is house pioneer and legendary DJ Theo Parrish.
Goldie, who was recently awarded an MBE for his contribution to UK music, also joins the fray along with Dan Deacon, Gold Panda and Luke Abbott.
Indie fans are well catered for as Standon adds Teleman, Meilyr Jones, Declan McKenna, Clean Cut Kid, Pins and Swim Deep.
Honne bring their futuristic soul and Natty, Tiggs Da Author, Hot 8 Brass Band, United Vibrations, Kiko Bun and Rag’n’bone Man inject a welcome mix of jazz, funk, reggae and R&B to the mix.
Also on hand to keep crowds entertained will be comedic superstars The Cuban Brothers.
Standon Calling has become renowned for offering a great platform for rising musicians to cut their teeth and over the years has hosted early performances from Florence + the Machine, Friendly Fires, Mumford and Sons, Bastille, London Grammar, Clean Bandit, The Maccabees and Paloma Faith.
This year the festival continues to support rising talent and welcomes Rationale, Loyle Carner, Billie Marten, Jones, Weaves, Flyte, Charlie Cunningham, Tangerines, The Amazons, Exmagician, Hannah Lou Clarke, Seramic, Revere, Venice Trip, Peluche, Bella Figura, Nadia Nair and Petricha.
As well as the music, there will be immersive theatre, the annual dog show, a fancy dress parade and, of course, the festival’s own heated outdoor swimming pool.
