A special 50th anniversary concert to mark the recording of pianist Stan Tracey’s famous jazz suite inspired by Dylan Thomas’ Under Milk Wood takes place in Welwyn Garden City this weekend.
As part of a national tour, Stan Tracey’s quartet will perform the narrated version of Under Milk Wood with Stan’s grandson, Ben Tracey, at Herts Jazz Club on Sunday night.
Replacing the late Stan Tracey on piano will be Steve Melling.
Also in the line-up is the great Bobby Wellins, who, of course, featured on that original recording in 1965. Wellins will be on tenor.
Completing the quartet will be Andrew Cleyndert on bass and Stan’s son, Herts Jazz Festival director Clark Tracey, on drums.
A spokesman for Herts Jazz Club said: “This is a unique opportunity both to revisit a seminal jazz landmark and to celebrate a much-missed figure in British jazz.”
The concert takes place in Screen 2 of the Garden City Cinema/Hawthorne Theatre complex at Campus West on Sunday night from 7.30pm to 10pm.
Advance tickets cost £3 students, £10 members, £13 concessions and £14 full.
They are £5 on the night for students, £12 members, £15 concessions and £16 full.
