A Welwyn Garden City church will be hosting an evening devoted to cool and accessible contemporary jazz.

Friends Music returns to The Free Church, aka the United Reformed Church, opposite the Sainsbury’s car park, tonight (Sunday) with saxophonist Les Rayner.

The Les Rayner fronted band Spontaneous Combustion includes Dave Gething on drums and Steve Clear on bass and the jazz harp.

Les said: “Spontaneous Combustion will be performing pieces by John Coltrane, including Acknowledgement from the A Love Supreme suite, Abdullah Ibrahim, including The Mountain, Michael Garrick from his Jazz Raga suite, and Charles Mingus including Goodbye Pork Pie Hat.

“These musicians have, in their own distinctive ways, brought a sense of spirituality to jazz which is why I have chosen to play their music – not necessarily in their style and certainly without their virtuosity, but hopefully with the same feeling of tapping into more than just the notes.”

Spontaneous Combustion will also be performing original compositions by Les Rayner himself.

Admission to the concert is free and the charity collection will be for music at Lakeside School in WGC.

The concert in Church Road starts at 6pm.
