A SERIES of gigs and free shows have been arranged for this weekend by organisers of Rhythms of the World.
Although the full Hitchin festival has been cancelled for 2013, some of the acts associated with the world music event will be performing in the town as part of the Rhythms of the World Outreach and Rhythms Presents programmes.
Organisers are urging music fans to show their support for the long-standing festival by attending a series of concerts planned for Club 85, The Victoria pub and St Mary’s Church on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Chair of RotW trustees, Amy Gibson, said: “Whilst we look for a new site for 2014, we have chosen to keep the Rhythms of the World spirit alive by organising a number of gigs around Hitchin.
“We have something for everyone and are delighted that some of our favourite acts are showing their support for Rhythms of the World by taking part.
“As a registered charity, we need all the support we can get – this includes donations, gifts in kind and volunteer help – and we hope the people of Hitchin and beyond will show their love for the festival by coming along.”
Some of the gigs have a small ticket price, while others are free.
Among the highlights will be Don Letts and Blunt Beats Crew at Club 85 on Friday.
The gig starts at 7.45pm and tickets cost £6 in advance and £8 on the door.
The same venue will host a free all ages gig on Saturday afternoon from 2pm featuring the likes of Staycation, Highwayman, Blighty, The Prophecy, Black Halo and Chrome.
Following that show, Fort Hope, who have risen from the ashes of My Passion, will play an evening gig from 7.45pm.
Tickets cost £5 in advance and £6 on the door.
Sunday afternoon will see another free, all ages, gig featuring the likes of Indi Forde, Roxy Searle, Beau Jangles and Kev Maher at Club 85 from noon to 5pm.
The venue will host Blyth Power and The Astronauts in another Rhythms of the World show from 7pm. Tickets cost £6 in advance and £8 on the door.
Amy added: “We are hosting a Family Fun Day on Sunday, July 14 and, whilst this and the other events aren’t a return of the festival to the streets of Hitchin, it’s a taste of what we hope to offer next year.”

* Rhythms of the World has been held at Hitchin Priory for the past five years.
In 2012, the festival weekend was very wet and the venue owners asked organisers to find another site.
Trustees were unable to do so in time to organise a full 2013 festival, so decided in February to cancel for this year.
A spokesman said: “We are currently exploring site options for a full festival in 2014 and expect to be able to confirm this later in the year.”
