There will be a rare UK appearance from a Baltimore-based pianist in Welwyn Garden City this evening (Sunday).

The Lafayette Gilchrist Trio plays Herts Jazz Club, in the Garden City Cinema’s Screen 2, at the Hawthorne Theatre, tonight (Sunday).

Despite his old-timey tremolos and thundering bass figures, Gilchrist doesn’t really sound like the old masters.

He lives in Baltimore but grew up in Washington DC, knee-deep in the city’s go-go music and hip-hop, and he also leads a loud, horn-intensive funk band, the New Volcanoes.

Joining Lafayette will be Arnie Somogyi on bass and Clark Tracey on drums.

The concert starts at 7.30pm.

Tickets in advance from www.hertsjazz.co.uk/currentseason.html are £3 students, £10 members, £13 concessions and £14 full.

On the door they are £5 students, £12 members, £15 concessions and £16 full.
