HERTS Jazz Club has announced its forthcoming autumn season and a new college venture.

The new season of gigs at Campus West, in Welwyn Garden City, kicks-off in style on Sunday, October 7 with a rare appearance by the Stan Tracey Octet.

Other highlights this term include performances by Alan Barnes, Jim Mullen, Don Weller and Christine Tobin.

This season also sees the launch of a new initiative by Herts Jazz – the ‘College Collection’.

It has long been the policy of Herts Jazz to support and raise the profiles of the next generation of jazz musicians.

So organisers have decided to provide an opportunity for talented young musicians still attending music colleges to perform their own compositions at Herts Jazz Club.

Over the coming year, Herts Jazz will be presenting a series of concerts featuring two groups per evening, representing musicians from the Royal Academy of Music, Trinity College of Music, the Guildhall School of Music, Leeds College of Music, Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Northern College of Music.

The group judged to have given the most promising performance will be invited to appear at the third Herts Jazz Festival next September.

Clark Tracey, of Herts Jazz, said: “We are grateful to PRS Foundation for Music for their financial support for the College Collection series.

“The autumn programme looks really exciting with this mixture of established stars and younger artists starting their careers.”
