A GUITARIST originally from Welwyn Hatfield joined The Rolling Stones on stage at a ‘secret’ show in America last night (Saturday) ahead of the rock group’s forthcoming 50 & Counting US tour dates.

Mick Taylor, a member of the Stones from 1969 to 1974, joined Sir Mick Jagger and co at the band’s surprise concert in a 700-capacity club in Los Angeles.

Tickets for the gig at the Echoplex, in the city’s Echo Park, cost just $20 and were offered on a lottery basis, with fans given only an hour’s notice before they went on sale.

During a 14-song set, acclaimed blues guitarist Taylor, who was born in Welwyn Garden City and went to Onslow School in Hatfield, took to the stage for Love in Vain, performing a solo during the song.

He also played fans’ favourite Midnight Rambler, from classic album Let It Bleed, alongside fellow guitarists Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood.

Taylor will be the band’s special guest throughout the upcoming tour of America and Canada.

He will also play with the Stones when they headline this summer’s Glastonbury Festival at Worthy Farm and when they return to London’s Hyde Park in July for two dates almost 44 years to the day of the group’s first show at the Royal Park.

In fact, Taylor’s first live appearance with the Stones was in front of an estimated 250,000 people at their 1969 free concert in Hyde Park, a gig held just days after the death of former member Brian Jones.

During his stint as first a session musician and then permanent member of the legendary rock group, Taylor played on seminal Stones albums Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers, Exile on Main St. and Goats Head Soup.

He also appeared with the Stones at last year’s 50th anniversary comeback gigs at the O2 in London.

The Rolling Stones’ Echoplex set list was:

1) You Got Me Rockin’

2 Respectable

3) She’s So Cold

4) Live With Me

5) Street Fighting Man

6) That’s How Strong My Love Is

7) Little Queenie

8) Just My Imagination

9) Miss You

10) Love in Vain

11) Midnight Rambler

12) Start Me Up

13) Brown Sugar

14) Jumpin’ Jack Flash
