A VETERAN of the British jazz scene will be appearing at Campus West in Welwyn Garden City tomorrow (Sunday) night.
Bobby Wellins brings his quartet to Herts Jazz Club on Sunday.
The saxophonist has been a leading figure in jazz since the 60s.
He has his own very distinctive sound, a keening cry recalling the bagpipes of his native Scotland, and he phrases with great elegance – every note is meant, none wasted.
His taste in saxophonists runs from Charlie Parker, Lester Young and Zoot Sims to John Coltrane, Lee Konitz and Tony Coe, but while embodying most of their virtues, he sounds like none of them.
Joining Bobby in the relaxed surroundings of the Hawthorne Studio on Sunday from 7.45pm will be Liam Noble on piano, Dave Whitford on bass and Dave Wickins on drums.
Tickets cost £10 in advance if bought on online from the Campus West website (click on link above) and £12 at the door. Herts Jazz Club members can get in for £8.
And to bring jazz to a wider audience, it costs just £5 for students and under 21s.
