The music of one of the most famous and influential jazz groups of the 20th century can be heard in Welwyn Garden City next month.
Sunday, June 4’s concert at Herts Jazz Club will be Portrait of the MJQ.
This is a new ensemble of well-known and celebrated UK musicians, performing the music of the ‘Modern Jazz Quartet’.
The MJQ is famous for bringing jazz out of the club and into the concert hall, and of being an early pioneer of the “third stream” fusion of classical form and jazz improvisation.
It featured the contrasting talents of its musical director and pianist, John Lewis, who played with an understated control, with the fiery, boppish stylings of vibes pioneer Milt Jackson.
Appearing in Screen 2 of the Garden City Cinema will be Nat Steele on vibraharp, Gabriel Latchin on piano, Dario Di Lecce on bass and Steve Brown on drums.
Advance tickets cost £3 students, £9 members, £11 concessions and £12 full.
Walk-ups are £5 students, £10 members, £13 concessions and £14 full.
The concert at the CW Entertainment venue starts at 7.30pm.
