Battle PromsBattle Proms

Since their first concert in 1997, organisers of the Battle Proms have been bringing their trademark mix of sublime music and dramatic display to some of the UK’s finest stately homes.

Hatfield House welcomes back the Battle Proms on Saturday, July 14 for their 18th annual open-air picnic concert in the historic parkland where Elizabeth I heard she had become Queen of England 460 years ago.

A crowd of around 8,000 happy picnickers will attend the concert in the Queen Elizabeth Oak Field on the Hatfield House estate.

As the classical picnic proms’ official media partner, the Welwyn Hatfield Times has teamed up with the proms organisers to offer you the chance to win a ‘money can’t buy’ experience.

The winner will receive six tickets to the concert, plus an exclusive invitation for their party to join Battle Proms conductor Douglas Coombes MBE on a behind-the-scenes tour.

They will enjoy an ‘orchestra’s eye view’ of the concert setting from the stage before meeting members of the English Field Artillery Company.

The company’s gunners fire the Evening Gun Salute from an original 13pdr World War One field gun, and the 200 authentic Napoleonic cannon that make the Battle Proms performance of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture and Beethoven’s Battle Symphony such a unique and breathtaking experience.

The experience ends with a visit to the fireworks team Skyburst, who will be only too happy to show you the wizardry behind Battle Proms’ fireworks displays that are heralded year upon year as among the most spectacular in the country.

And, of course, the winners will still enjoy all the highlights of the Battle Proms, including daring cavalry displays in full WW1 regalia, a meticulously choreographed Spitfire display to Elgar’s Nimrod, and a sensational freefall demonstration by The Red Devils parachute display team.

There will also be toe-tapping vintage vocals from The Vignettes on stage before the main classical programme starts.

The Battle Proms features a full orchestral performance by the 60-piece New English Concert Orchestra – conducted by our competition winner’s new friend Douglas Coombes – and all the pyrotechnic delights provided by the English Field Artillery Company and Skyburst.

The orchestral concert will open with a volley of shots from an original WW1 field gun in honour of all those who gave their lives during the war.
