A top trumpeter will be performing live at a weekly music night in Welwyn Garden City this weekend.

The Damon Brown Quintet plays Herts Jazz Club on Sunday, October 8.

A trumpet player and composer whose ‘Killer Shrimp’ group won a Parliamentary Jazz Award for Best Jazz Ensemble in 2007, not to mention a nomination for best CD, Damon Brown has spent years living abroad, exploring his craft.

The journey has yielded more than musical inspiration, with many international collaborations ensuing, such as the regular quintet that he co-leads with New York sax virtuoso Steve Grossman.

A Herts Jazz spokesman said: “Good to have this underrated musician back again.”

Appearing with Damon in Screen 2 of the Garden City Cinema/Hawthorne Theatre complex in The Campus on Sunday night will be Christian Brewer (alto), Leon Greening (piano), Adam King (bass) and Kim Minchan (drums).

Advance tickets cost £3 students, £9 members, £11 concessions and £12 full.

Walk-ups are £5 students, £10 members, £13 concessions and £14 full.

The gig starts at 7.30pm.
