A popular Czech string quartet returns to Welwyn Hatfield this weekend for the latest Welwyn Garden chamber music concert.

The Wihan Quartet features Leos Cepicky on violin, Jan Schulmeister on violin, Jakub Cepicky on viola and Ales Kasprik on cello.

They will be performing at the Hawthorne Theatre on Saturday, February 21.

Helen Shabetai, of the Welwyn Garden Concert Club, said: “The Wihan Quartet has visited WGC on several occasions and has built a large number of fans here.”

The quartet is currently celebrating 30 years since its formation, and has been described as “one of the best quartets in the world today” by International Record Review.

All the members of the Wihan are Czech and studied in Prague.

The quartet has won many international competitions, including The Prague Spring Festival, the Osaka ‘Chamber Festa’ and the London International String Quartet Competition.

The musicians play at the major festivals in Europe and the Far East, visiting Japan regularly, as well as touring the United States, Australia and New Zealand.

The Wihan are the ‘Richard Carne Quartet in Residence’ at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, London, and also coach at the Royal Academy of Music, London.

The quartet has developed an outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech heritage, alongside many classical, romantic and modern masterpieces of the string quartet repertoire.

Their Czech offering on this latest visit to Campus West will feature Smetana’s String Quartet No.1 ‘From My Life’, which will be performed alongside Mozart’s String Quartet in D minor K421 and Beethoven’s String Quartet in F Op.59 No.1.

The Wihan Qaurtet’s concert at the Hawthorne Theatre starts at 7.45pm.

Tickets cost £16, and £5 students. Call the box office on 0300 303 9620.
