Blake searching for choir to sing with them in Stevenage

AN award-winning classical group is searching for a local choir to sing with them in concert in Hertfordshire next year.
Following Blake’s nationwide hunt for choirs to join them as part of their recent autumn tour, the foursome – Oliver Baines, Stephen Bowman, Jules Knight and Humphrey Berney – have decided to extend the invitation for their 2011 dates.
The Classical BRIT Award winners will be at the Gordon Craig Theatre in Stevenage on Wednesday, January 26 and want a choir to perform with them that night.
Famed for their pop-opera renditions of songs such as Hallelujah, Jerusalem and Nessum Dorma, the classical crossover quartet came up with the idea of having a local choir joining them on stage after they toured schools across the country giving performances and talks about the music industry. Baritone Jules Knight explained: “The schools tour was part of the ‘campaign’ for our second Brit nomination, but it quickly became so much more than that to us.
“The kids really engaged with what we did and we were blown away by the talent and confidence of some of them in the mock X Factor auditions that we held.
“With all that singing talent, we just couldn’t understand why choirs weren’t as popular as they used to be.”
One lucky choir will be chosen for each concert on their forthcoming tour and will accompany Blake in performing songs that helped catapult the group to global success following their formation via Facebook in 2007.
Tenor Humphrey Berney added: “It’s been inspirational to see so many choirs send in their material and a pleasure to perform with them all.
“We are looking forward to seeing more footage from choirs across the country and performing with them as part of the tour.”
With a unique style that bridges the gap between pop and opera, Blake’s self-titled debut album won a Classical BRIT Award and featured God Only Knows, Moon River and Swing Low Sweet Chariot.
They have released two multi-selling albums since, featuring tracks such as Snow Patrol’s Chasing Cars and With or Without You by U2.
The members of Blake all found their love of music at a young age and sang with various groups and choirs throughout their childhood.
They now want to share their passion for music with the masses.
“We thought about how we could involve school choirs and local community choirs in our live shows, and that getting some of the choirs up on stage with us would be a great experience for both them and us” said tenor Oliver Baines.
Baritone Stephen Bowman said of the project: “We’ve always believed that choirs are totally essential to the future of British music, and we’re proud to be getting great choirs up on to some of the UK’s finest stages to show our audiences who the next wave of great performers might be.”
