A TRIO of world famous names from stage, screen and the arts will be appearing live at the Hawthorne Theatre in Welwyn Garden City over the coming months.

IF you want to see the big names in theatre and music, most people feel they have to travel into London.

But that’s not always the case, as three giants in their field come to the Hawthorne Theatre, in Welwyn Garden City, for a trio of shows.

First to arrive in May is the acclaimed actor Timothy West.

Veteran of the National Theatre and the RSC, most recently seen in Coronation Street, husband to Prunella Scales and a CBE, Timothy West will be appearing alongside the Pavao String Quartet in a production of Janacek’s Intimate Letters.

Alongside the quartet’s sensitive performance, West will lend his distinctive voice to bring the composer’s letters to life, telling of the affair he had with a married woman and the effect it had on his music.

* Timothy West appears with the Pavao String Quartet in Intimate Letters on Wednesday, May 15 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £18 (£16 in advance, £14 with a Zebra Card).

Staying in the world of classical music, the next name to arrive belongs to celebrated cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.

Widely regarded as one of the most creative musicians of his generation, he will be playing a selection of classical and modern pieces – including some written by his equally famous brother, Andrew – and taking questions about his life on stage.

*An Evening With Julian Lloyd Webber is on Thursday, October 17 at 8pm. Tickets are £27 (£24 with a Zebra Card).

If you prefer the dramatic arts to the world of music, however, you should book early for An Audience With Steven Berkoff in October.

The famous actor/director/writer – and star of James Bond movie Octopussy and the recent Girl With The Dragon Tattoo remake – will be in conversation with local actor and director Guy Masterson before opening up the evening to audience questions.

As someone whose work is studied in schools, and who is equally at home in the National Theatre and Hollywood, he should certainly be an interesting subject.

*An Audience With Steven Berkoff is on Thursday, October 31 at 8pm. Tickets are £21.50 (£19.50 with a Zebra Card).
