Exhibition in full flow at Campus West

WELWYN Garden City textile artist Nicky Callaby has her first solo exhibition, In Flow and Flight, currently on display at the Dame Flora Robson Gallery, Campus West.

This poignant exhibition communicates through bold colour and stitch, and uses mark making to convey unspoken words.

Nicky recently completed a masters in art and design at the University of Hertfordshire in Hatfield.

She gained a distinction for her stunning artworks, which express the issue of self-injury in a beautiful and innovative way.

Nicky says that research during her MA compelled her to use her own, personal experiences of self-injury, to produce artwork that will raise awareness of this growing phenomenon.

Nicky’s intention is that through this, and other exhibitions, she will help to reduce the stigma surrounding self-injury, as well as encourage self-harmers to seek help and find alternative methods of coping.

She believes that the urge to self-injure would not be so prevalent if people had greater respect, for each other, and were taught better communication and coping skills.

In Flow and Flight runs until next Thursday and can be viewed when Campus West, in WGC, is open.
