Wrong about council housing

Sir - We feel we must address the letter of last Wednesday, referring to council tenants, submitted by an anonymous reader (WHT January 21).
The allegation that council properties, are being neglected, both inside and out, and gardens left untended, by council tenants, and council's unwillingness to enforce tenancy agreements, needs addressing.
To correct their misguided opinion, (it is clear that they were one of the ex tenants to buy their property, under the right-to-buy scheme, which has accounted for nearly 50 per cent of the then housing stock), that they contribute financially towards the repairs etc, is totally untrue.
Any such money comes the council's housing revenue account and from this account only - the government took some £16m-plus last year from this account - and as an owner-occupier, they contribute nothing towards repairs and up keep of said properties.
We believe that the article writer could be referring to properties being let for private accommodation. We agree that some of these properties and their gardens are in an appalling state. Trying to trace, and enforce said landlords, to correct these issues, is a non starter, and needs urgent action.
Reference was made to an ex-resident of WGC calling WGC "Welwyn Bog Hamlet" because of these issues.
May we ask what name they would give to Hatfield? We refer to the current private accommodation being let to students, and others, in Hatfield which greatly exceeds any problem in WGC.
As current Tenant Panel members with 20-plus years between us, we are kept up-to-date on the condition of the housing stock, tenants, and other issues, and feel the writer has laid the blame for properties in question in the wrong quarter.
We have good tenants, with a good record, and good council facilities.
May we also point out that dog owners include not only tenants, but leaseholders etc also, and it falls on all parties to attend to their dogs' requirements.
