SIR - We, the monthly meeting of the Hatfield clergy representing all the Christian communities of Hatfield , have discussed the recent news concerning the postponement of the redevelopment of Hatfield Town Centre.

We are both concerned and dismayed at this.

Our local ecumenical body, Churches Together in Hatfield, is very conscious of the desire to contribute to the social and cultural health of our town and the wellbeing of the people.

Hatfield needs a vibrant centre.

The people of Hatfield deserve a vibrant town centre.

While we appreciate the difficult economic times we also are aware of the cynicism around and the sense we hear from people we talk to that Hatfield appears to be treated as a second or third rate community.

We want to assure the local community that our prayers are for the positive development of our town and of our faith that this is a good community which contains many able and talented people.

Our shared faith tells us that God cares for Hatfield and its people; and we shall continue to witness to the hopes we have for the future.
