Sir - I noted the letter by Jill Weston on the situation in Gaza (WHT January 7) and wondered how serious she is of the charges of terrorism.

The Taliban, Al Qaeda, Hamas all have equal aims, one of which is the elimination of Jews, and Israel.

Israel, whether she likes it or not, is at the sharp end of the fight against terrorism, as are our forces in Afghanistan.

She argues that the battle in Gaza is "disproportionate". Is she trying to say that it's only fair that our forces, for instance, should incur more casualties than the enemy? The idea is ridiculous.

War is not a game, and at the sharp end, is terrifying, grim and bloody, where survival depends on not losing and rules are few. Sadly it means to kill or be killed.

She mentions the use of US and UK arms by Israel. No mention of others like Iran, Syria, Russia etc, who supply Hamas with sophisticated weapons like rockets.

These are now becoming used on targets further into Israel, and it won't be too long before they will reach the atomic establishments inside Israel - the possibility of that is unthinkable.

A British journalist who was interviewing a Taliban leader in Afghanistan was told "You Westerners love life - we love death.'' What kind of ethic is that?

How can we comprehend the mindset of terrorists? The use of suicide bombing, of course, supports the Taliban leader's words.

If such people wish to take over the world, then they would need to start with Israel, as they say they intend to do.

Terrorism is the greatest danger to the World, and to defeat this evil is going to be difficult, dangerous and bloody, if we are to rid the World of this evil, and weakness is not a good weapon.

All those who face the danger must be supported.
