SIR - I am just writing to thank the people of Welham Green for their warmth and support as Liberal Democrat candidate during the recent council by-election. Whilst it is a shame that I will be unable to represent the village in the way that I had hoped, the experience of running for election was a very interesting one. In a very short time I learned an awful lot about the things that matter to people in their everyday lives at a local level. My campaign highlighted the fact that people need and want to be heard, and a bottom-up approach to local government would achieve this.

On May 1, Welwyn Hatfield will have an opportuniy to elect all 48 of its borough councillors on the same day and I hope that as many people as possible will make their voices heard in the ballot box. I also hope that the local councillors standing for re-election will take notice of the full Welham Green result as I beleive it highlighted that it is not just the big issues in each ward but also individual and street-level issues that really matter. On those small scale issues such as the parking problems on Holloways Lane and Nash Close, many people I spoke to didn't feel like they were being listened to by the present council.

Here's hoping that January 3 was a wake up call.

John Elvy, Willowmead, Hertford.
