SIR - Our roads! What is going on? The condition of the roads in the district is a disgrace and getting worse.

The latest mess is Stanborough Road which was closed recently for resurfacing but in the end all that was done was to fill in cracks and potholes leaving a road surface Land Rover's proving ground would be proud of (except the section by the Police Headquarters which would do credit to Pot Black!).

I would bet that this time next year, Stanborough Road will be back to the cracks and potholes again once the weather has got to work.

There is the occasional complaint about the state of our roads, but we have such a steady deterioration going on that I suspect it has now passed the point of no return when it is not possible to keep our roads resurfaced properly anymore.

What we have now is the future. We will therefore be faced with an ever growing repair cost to our vehicles, the vast majority not being designed for such conditions, not to mention the impact(!) on the comfort of occupants.

Recognising that the responsibility of the roads is in the hands of the county council, would they care to comment about the present state and how they intend to make things better for the future?

I would also contend that the district council has a responsibilty to its citizens to ensure the county council makes good our local roads.

I suppose the easy answer is 'no money' but I would welcome some word from the authorities on what they intend for the maintenance of our roads in the future and will we ever have decent roads again.
