SIR - With regard to the letter last week (about getting to Lister Hospital when the A1(M) is congested) in the summer we have maintenance work starting on the motorway tunnels at Hatfield.

As we saw with the multiple traffic accident at junction six northbound, supposing the same thing happens, which it will when the roadworks start.

Well, all the surrounding streets and other roads will be very congested.

Even now people cut through Birchwood estate to avoid the Tesco roundabout, and not just during the rush hour, so what is it going to be like when the roadworks start in the tunnels?

Supposing that when the roadworks have started and then there is an RTA at junction six northbound and an RTA in the roadworks, god forbid, at the same time. The emergency services are going to be pretty hard pushed trying to get anybody to hospital especially as the local A&E is threatened with closure.

Surely it would be a sensible idea to delay any further closures at the QE2 until all the maintenance on the tunnels is finished.
