SIR - IAM observer Mark Burton's tips for safer driving (WHT, Lifestyle: My driving ambition achieved, January 9.) included one that may be misinterpreted. He says, "On a dual carriageway try to have an empty lane beside you except briefly when overtaking."

This implies the lane to your left.

I am sure he did not mean it that way as this would encourage drivers to use the centre lane on a three lane dual carriageway and the right hand lane on a two lane road.

Drivers hogging the centre and right hand lanes are a major cause of frustration and congestion.

In Britain we drive on the left. Drivers must drive in the left hand lane unless they are overtaking slower vehicles. When the overtaking manoeuvre has been completed they should move back into the left hand lane.
