A new Sherlock Holmes movie starring Sir Ian McKellen, which hits UK cinema screens today (Friday), was partly filmed in Hatfield.

Mr Holmes includes scenes shot at Hatfield House.

It stars Sir Ian McKellen as the world’s most famous detective.

When Vicious sitcom star McKellen, recently seen in The Hobbit trilogy, tweeted a link to the film’s official UK trailer, Hatfield House responded on Twitter: “We cannot wait to see @MrHolmesMovie starring @IanMcKellen

“Can you spot the gardens and rooms used @Hatfield_House”

It is not the first Sherlock Holmes movie to be filmed in the grounds of Hatfield House.

Guy Ritchie’s 2009 film Sherlock Holmes blockbuster starring Robert Downey Jr and Jude Law was also shot at the Hertfordshire stately home.

Mr Holmes is a new twist on the Sherlock story.

In his remote seaside farmhouse, an aging Sherlock Holmes faces the end of his days tending to his bees, with only the company of his housekeeper and her young son, Roger.

Based on Mitch Cullin’s novel A Slight Trick of the Mind, the film sees the detective struggling with a failing memory and revisiting one final mystery.

Grappling with the diminishing powers of his mind, Holmes comes to rely upon the boy as he revisits the circumstances of the unsolved case that forced him into retirement, and searches for answers to the mysteries of life and love – before it’s too late.

As well as McKellen as the eponymous sleuth, Mr Holmes also stars Laura Linney as housekeeper Mrs Munro.
