Olivia Colman crowned queen of the BAFTAs as movie made in Hatfield wins seven awards

The Favourite was Sunday night’s big winner at the EE British Academy Film Awards at the Royal Albert Hall in London, with Olivia Colman crowned queen of the BAFTAs.

Yorgos Lanthimos’ acerbic period comedy drama was filmed at Hatfield House in the spring of 2017, with the Hertfordshire stately home doubling as Queen Anne’s royal residence.

About 85% of the movie was shot at Hatfield House, with the Marble Hall, Library, King James Drawing Room and Long Gallery among the rooms used.

The gardens and grounds also feature extensively in the bawdy 18th century drama about two cousins jostling for power and influence in Queen Anne’s court.

Although missing out on Best Film to Roma, The Favourite took home the Outstanding British Film gong at last night’s glittering ceremony.

Broadchurch and Peep Show star Olivia Colman won the Leading Actress BAFTA for her portrayal of the gout-ridden monarch.

She beat Glenn Close in The Wife, Lady Gaga for A Star is Born, Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me? and Widows’ Viola Davis to the accolade.

A thoroughly overwhelmed and emotional Olivia paid tribute to her fellow nominees in her acceptance speech and thanked “all the producers, obvs.”

She also praised her The Favourite co-stars Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, both for their performances on set and afterwards.

Colman said: “As far as I’m concerned all three of us are the same and should be the leads and it’s weird we can’t do that.

“This is for all three of us. It’s got my name on it but we can scratch on some other ones.”

Referring to her fellow winners from the movie made in Hatfield, Colman added: “We are having an amazing night aren’t we?”

Rachel Weisz, who plays Lady Sarah Churchill, Duchess of Marlborough in the film, beat her The Favourite co-star Emma Stone to the Best Supporting Actress award.

Also nominated were Amy Adams for Vice, Claire Foy for First Man and Margot Robbie for Mary Queen of Scots.

The Favourite’s Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara won Best Original Screenplay, and the film’s Fiona Crombie and Alice Felton claimed the Production Design trophy.

Sandy Powell’s stunning costumes for The Favourite won in the Costume Design category, and Nadia Stacey was victorious in the Make Up & Hair award.

“Approximately 85% of the film was shot at Hatfield House and are we are delighted with how stunning Hatfield looks in the multiple scenes.

“Those visitors who are familiar with the House will notice some significant changes made to the both the interior and exterior of the building.

“The transformation of the House saw secret passages and doorways being added and King James’s Drawing Room and the Library in particular were subject to a number of additions and alterations.”

Senior operations manager Sarah Cardall-Spawforth added: “It is fantastic to be able to say that Hollywood arrived here at the Estate.”

The movie has also been nominated for 10 Oscars.
