WGC-born distance runner Liz Yelling finished 26th in the women's marathon at the Beijing Olympics.

The Brit had led the field in the early stages of the endurance event but slipped down to finish in 2 hours 33 minutes 07 seconds.

It was the athlete's second Games after she was 25th in the marathon at the Athens Olympics four years ago.

In China Yelling came in behind GB team mate Mara Yamauchi, who was sixth, and her friend Paula Radcliffe, in 23rd, over the 26.2 mile race.

Romanian Constantina Tomescu won the gold medal with a time of 2 hr 25 mins 44 secs.

Silver went to Catherine Ndereba of Kenya with China's Chunxiu Zhou collecting the bronze medal.
