THERE was a winning start for Potters Bar Bowls Club's captains.

The club's mixed friendly fixture against near neighbours Harperbury BC is by tradition the start of the new outdoors bowling season.

With the playing surface a little heavy at this early part of the season, the match was a true test of fitness.

So it was all the more rewarding that Brian Burfoot in his first outdoor match as men's captain and Josie Massey, in her second year as ladies' captain, scored a convincing win by 79 shots to 50.

Potters Bar's bowlers also took all four rinks.

Val Capstick, Bob Maule, Josie Massey and Brian Tomlinson won their rink 21-10.

There was a 23-12 win for Eve Fenwick, Jean Stokes, Keith Ades and Stuart Frost, while Bill Massey, Maureen Neal, Graham Marriner and Pat Thompson emerged triumphant by 19 shots to 14.

Derek Goodwin, Gladys Platts, Brian Burfoot and Anne Clarke took the other rink by two shots with a 16-14 score.
