The only consistent thing about Welwyn Garden City this season seems to be their inconsistency - although this week it resulted in a huge win away to North Mymms.

After a disappointing defeat to West Herts last week, the Digswell Park-based cricket club were in scintillating form as they romped to a 203-run victory.

Louis Champion, Dan Blacktopp and James Southgate all posted more than 70 runs as WGC got to 323-6 in their 60 overs.

Southgate then chipped in three wickets and Matthew Grant four as the hosts were all out for just 120, the final batsman falling to the first ball of the 26th over.

For Mymms it was their second successive defeat following last week’s shock loss to Letchworth and has seen the former Saracens Hertfordshire Cricket League Premier Division leaders fall to second, just one place and eight points ahead of WGC now.

With the sun bleaching down on Home Farm, City won the toss and elected to bat.

They lost James Hewitt early but Champion and Blacktopp then settled everything down with 150 for the second wicket.

Champion fell first for 82, one of Dharmarajsinh Jhala’s two victims, and Rhys Wynne ended Blacktopp’s stay at the crease shortly after with the wicket-keeper on 73.

That brought Owais Shah and Southgate together and the pair managed 89 for the fourth-wicket partnership before Shah was trapped lbw for 52.

Southgate hung around until the end though, remaining unbeaten on 71 as WGC posted their big target.

Jhala, one of seven bowlers used by Mymms, was the only one to grab more than one wicket, finishing on 2-90 after 20 overs.

And any hopes the home side had of mounting a stirring fight were ended early.

The Emerton brothers, Connor and Shay, struck once each with the score on 15 and Connor then added a second wicket by having Steve Snell caught behind.

Spin then finished things off as Grant (4-31) and Southgate (3-6) kept Mymms in a vice-like grip.

Snell’s 61-run partnership with Nesan Jeyaratnam (16) for the third wicket proved the highlight for the home team’s batting although Mohibullah Oryakhel’s 29 from 24 balls did provide late excitement.

WGC play new league leaders Totteridge Millhillians at home on Saturday while Mymms go to Radlett.
