Five Welwyn Wheelers riders travelled to Newport for the Youth National Track Championships with various degrees of success.

In the U16 sprint Tom Sharples set a Wheelers record of 11.5 seconds for the flying start 200m time trial, used as a qualifying event to determine the top 12 riders for the sprint heats and finals.

And he went on to place fifth overall.

Sharples, along with team-mates Oli Stockwell and Joe Kiely reached the final of the scratch race with Stockwell finishing fifth, a position he repeated in the points race.

Iona Moir was 19th in the U16 2,000m pursuit while Ellen Bennett was eliminated in the sprint heats by the eventual runner-up.

The talented Wheelers youngsters now turn their attention to the road with 11 making the trip to Assen in the Netherlands for the six-day International Youth Tour, a closed-road event that attracts around 700 riders from across the continent.
