Welwyn's men and women enjoy cup wins

BOTH the ladies' and men's teams from Welwyn & District Bowls Club are through to the National Top Club Cup third round.

The ladies from Ottway Walk defeated Rowley Lane in the second round of the competition on Saturday.

An exciting singles match between Welwyn's Lucy Ratcliffe and Alison Hall was won by the Rowley player 21-19.

However, Welwyn finished as winners in the three other disciplines.

Diana Barrett and Sylvia Lane won the pairs 22-10.

The triples saw Betty Singleton, Dilys Hanson and Sue Larkins triumph 20-15, while in the fours Pauline Ellis, Jillian Jennings, Sue Wingham and Jean Webb claimed a 22-20 success.

Welwyn play Harperbury in the next round, which will be held at the Welwyn club on Saturday.

Last Sunday morning Welwyn's men beat Abbotts Langley in the National Top Club second round.

The Times Territory side triumphed in three of the four disciplines.

Chris Sherriff won the singles game 21-16 and John Lee and Barry Smith finished on top in the pairs by 20-17.

The triples saw Malcolm Baldwin, Ted Webb and Nigel Woor win 30-12, while in the fours Graham Daniels, Ralph Pedder, David Ratcliffe and Ron Carr lost 23-18.

They now meet Oakhill in the third round away.

Welwyn's men were beaten 90 shots to 70 by Townsend in the St Albans & District Rinks League on Saturday.
