WELWYN Wheelers' senior race group started their 2008 campaign on Sunday with seven riders taking the start of the North Road Hardriders Time Trial event.

The annual race is a traditional season opener and usually covers 25 miles around the lanes, known as Little Switzerland, between Hertford and Brookmans Park.

This year's event was held over only 18 miles because of roadworks on the course.

The event was won by Julian Ramsbotton, of DeRosa RT, in a time of 45 minutes 55 seconds.

Graeme Anderson recorded the best time for a Welwyn Wheeler.

His 50 mins 09 secs secured him 30th place overall, some 93 seconds faster than his nearest club colleague Adrian Trott, who was 39th.

Dave Scott was the third fastest Wheeler home a further 55 seconds behind in 43rd place.

Expressing the overall opinion of all those taking part, Trott said: "We now know where we are fitness-wise, and know how much extra work we need to do before the Welwyn Easter Hilly.

"But it's only February and we all have objectives stretching way into the summer, so early days."

Next stop for the seniors will be supporting the club's youth racing group for Under-8s to Under-16s.

They start their 2008 programme at Milton Keynes next Saturday.
