THE first Festival of Sport in Welwyn Hatfield for 25 years will be staged on Sunday, May 26 at Stanborough Park.

The Festival, organised by Hercules Events and Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, will include a wide range of sports events; a 10 km run, 1.5 km Children’s Fun run, three triathlons (which involve swimming cycling and running), three open water swim races (5 km, 3 km and 7.50m) and a 100 km cycle.

The Festival of Sport builds on the history of sport in Welwyn Hatfield and the successful triathlon that was held at Stanborough Park last May, which saw elite competitors from around the UK, including Women’s Age Group World Champion Kate Robson and Team GB members come to Times Territory.

For many years Welwyn Hatfield and other New Towns vied to put on the most impressive Festival of Sport.

Sadly those regional Olympiads were allowed to end.

Hercules Events, working in partnership with Welwyn Hatfield Borough Council, are working to bring high profile sporting events back to the town.

This year’s sporting festival encompasses a wide range of sports, however, plans are already underway to develop the Festival of Sport year on year, putting Welwyn Hatfield firmly back on the sporting map.

Race director Gifty Enright, said: “The 2012 event was a resounding success.

“We were inspired by the enthusiasm of the Welwyn Hatfield community to bring the Festival of Sport back to life in the town.

“We are particularly keen to involve schools and young people in the event, and we are hoping that local schools will take up our School’s Challenge’

“The Festival of Sport on the May 26 will be bigger, better and more exciting.

“Year on year we intend to continue building Welwyn Hatfield’s Festival of Sport into a regional and national event.”

Welwyn Hatfield MP and Conservative Party Chairman, Rt. Hon. Grant Shapps, will be attending the event again this year to award the prizes to the winning athletes.

He added: “I am really looking forward to attending this ambitious Festival of Sport. Welwyn Hatfield has wonderful sporting history and facilities, so I am delighted to support this event and the competitors.”

Councillor Darren Bennett, Welwyn Hatfield sports champion, who is competing in the 10k run, said: “After Britain’s successful Olympic year, Welwyn Hatfield is following suit with its own fun festival and bringing sport back to the borough for both young and old and the fit and the not so fit.

“So whether you are a champion swimmer or just starting out with a family fun run, this is a chance for everyone to sign up and take part.”

Enright, added: “We have spent a full year planning this event.

“We have had enormous support from Welwyn and Hatfield Council, Finesse Leisure (who operate Stanborough Park), and Rupert Gadd of Hertfordshire Police.”

The Stanborough Air Cadets and Stanborough Royal Marine Cadets will marshal the event.
