WELWYN and Hatfield's Under-13 District cricket team are celebrating after defeating both Dacorum and East Herts.

After attending an indoor winter training programme, a squad of boys from Welwyn, Hatfield and Potters Bar were selected to represent their region at cricket.

The under-13's first match, in May, against Hertsmere was cancelled due to rain.

However, with the other fixtures being moved to July, the squad of boys were ready to make the district proud.

On a hot, sunny July afternoon the boys turned out for the second fixture to face Dacorum in a 30 over game.

Dacorum lost the toss and the Times Territory side chose to field.

Dacorum posted a competitive 175 for their opponents to chase.

Welwyn Hatfield were ready to take on this challenge.

After a superb partnership of more than 100 by two of the batsmen the remaining batters continued to keep the run rate high.

The side headed home as comfortable winners with seven wickets to spare.

Welwyn Hatfield met East Herts in Bishop's Stortford in the third game.

The away side fielded first and did well.

With improved bowling and fielding, East Herts were restricted to 125 off their allocation of 30 overs.

Welwyn Hatfield went into bat and responded with another great display by the opening batsman.

He posted his half century as the District outfit looked set for victory.

However, a middle order batting collapse put hosts East Herts back in the match.

It was down to the late order batsmen to steer Welwyn Hatfield to a narrow two-wicket victory.

Unfortunately, Broxbourne could not field an away team for the final fixture.

After finishing unbeaten, the boys look forward to the winter nets and playing more games next season.

The triumphant Welwyn & District squad was: Adam Saul, James Sykes, Daniel Cope, John Atkins, Michael Hetherington, Lewis Day, Luke Jackson, Greg Marsh, Priyan Mistry, Kailash Ramlaul, James Taylor, George Taylor, Luke Short Connor Wren and Gavin Brown.
