Welwyn Garden City are up to second place in Division 3SW after a convincing 3-0 win at off-colour St Albans 4ths on Saturday.

Following last week’s eight-goal draw at home to Bedford 3rds, the away side started on the front foot and almost got ahead early on.

An aerial ball from Jens van Helden found Rob Sansom running into the area but his shot was pushed around the post.

Moments later, Bryn Evans was denied by the keeper and Matt O’Connell’s rebound was cleared off the line.

WGC kept up the pressure up and were rewarded when good play through the middle between Mark Skilbeck and O’Connell found Oli Reynolds in the area.

His first touch lifted the ball up and he struck the dropping ball reverse stick in between the keeper’s legs.

WGC kept up the momentum and it wasn’t long before they got their second.

Good play down the left from Pete Mullens and van Helden found Evans at the top of the area and, on the turn, he fizzed the ball into the top corner. The visitors pushed on in the second half but found the home keeper in terrific form, making several key saves.

Eventually they managed to break through St Albans’ back line.

A breakaway from a St Albans short corner eventually fell at the stick of Evans who first looked to cross for van Helden before hitting a reverse stick effort into the top corner.

WGC had a chance late on to make it four but Evans struck wide when one-on-one with the keeper.

On Saturday, WGC face Southgate Adelaide who got their first win of the season this week.
