Kat Parry's goal rescued a 1-1 draw for WGC Ladies away to rivals Hertford on Saturday in their latest East League Division 2SW game.
With both teams struggling to find their form this season, WGC went into the game hoping to add to their points tally, but with players missing due to half-term and illness, it was going to be a tall order.
The first half was even with Hertford taking the lead against the run of play.
WGC’s defence, including player of the match Lisa Sheffield, had held strong throughout, but a lapse in concentration allowed the home side in.
Keeper Erica Stovold had made a couple of good saves but was powerless to stop the hosts going ahead.
Undeterred WGC continued to press forward.
Kay Dobney was effective in the central midfield and linked well with fellow midfielders Heather Veal and Jane Kinghorn.
Forwards Jodie Sharkey, Parry and Ellie Forbes were given plenty of possession, but couldn’t find that final telling shot at goal.
WGC came out for the second half with renewed determination but Hertford had the same idea.
For the first 10 minutes defenders Nai Walker, Charlie Honour and Annabel Mabin, together with Sheffield and Stovold, had their work cut out to prevent the home side going further ahead.
But hold on they did with Stovold making several excellent saves.
Having weathered the storm the De Havilland-based girls piled on the pressure. They were rewarded when Parry pounced on the rebound from her own shot to flick over the prone keeper to draw level.
Kinghorn and Sharkey also came close but their shots went just wide.
A draw was a fair result and WGC will hope to improve on that on Saturday as they host Letchworth.
In other results the 2nds lost 9-0 to Chiltern and the 3rds beat Hertford 4ths 3-1 with goals from Chloe Bates, Lyndsey Bottoms and Eda O’Donnell.
