Welwyn Garden City Hockey Club’s Ladies first team were crowned champions of the 5 Counties Women’s Hockey League Premier Division on Saturday with an emphatic 3-0 victory over second placed Leighton Buzzard.

This sends the de Havilland-based girls back to the East Regional Women’s League after two seasons.

The disappointment of the previous week, when Welwyn missed the chance to seal promotion with a game in hand, was totally forgotten as the girls produced some of their best hockey befitting the top of the table clash.

A club spokesperson said: “This had been an excellent team performance with everyone playing their part and a great reward for all the hard work and dedication that everyone has put in over the season.

“It was especially pleasing to show manager Graham Webster that all his hard work in developing the team over the last 18 months had not gone to waste. It was a great day for WGC Hockey Club.”
