A BOWLS club is marking its 70th anniversary this summer – and will do so in swish new surroundings.

For a new clubhouse extension has just been completed at WGC Bowls Club, in Digswell Park.

Bowls club president Doug King said: “The building provides a new large clubroom area for the club during the summer season and for community indoor activities and social events during the winter, a new fully refurbished kitchen area and changing rooms.

“The project has taken a great deal of effort and all those involved have worked really hard to create a comfortable modern space and new clubroom that everyone can be proud of.”

The extension, carried out by Select Building Services, was started in January and has been finished on schedule, in time for the summer season.

Funding for the project came from a number of channels – the Big Lottery Fund, Lafarge Aggregates’ Landfill Communities Fund, Bowls England and fundraising by club members.

The bowls club, which was founded in 1942, shares its ground and facilities with WGC Cricket Club.

With around 80 members, Mr King added he was now looking forward to attracting a new generation of young bowlers to the club.
