With the FIFA Women’s World Cup just 10 days away, Alex Scott believes 2015 could finally be the year England end the country’s search for a major international trophy.

The Three Lions have been drawn with France, Colombia and Mexico in the group stages in Canada.

England’s best result remains three quarter-final exits, 1995 v Germany, 2007 v USA and France in 2011 in seven outings at the tournament, but full-back Scott feels the 49-year wait for men’s and women’s silverware drought could draw to a close on July 5, the day of the showpiece final.

WGC’S Scott said: “We are all excited. We have just come back from a 10-day training camp at St Georges’ Park so we can’t say we haven’t had the right preparation because it has been great.

“Mark (Sampson) has been putting us through our paces and he has given us aims and goals which we believe we can achieve.

“We are going into the tournament like every other team, thinking that this could be our year. That has to be the aim otherwise why would we go over there?

“We will have our work cut out in the group but I think our preparation has been spot on so we are well-equipped to go far in this tournament.”

Mark Sampson’s side take to the field for a final wam-up game before the start of the competition against the hosts this Friday in Hamilton, Ontario, being broadcast live on the BBC red button and BBC Sport website from 11pm, and veteran Scott thinks the 23-strong England squad that has been assembled can deliver in every department.

She continued: “I think the squad is as good as we have so we are confident.

“In every area we have youth, experience and quality which will be crucial in such a high-profile tournament.

“We have played the top two teams in the world, Germany and USA, in recent times, as well as winning the Cyprus Cup again and we have learnt from those experiences.

“From our learning and what we have within the squad, we can trouble the best.”

Preparing for her third World Cup, the 31-year-old believes she is in the best shape of her career.

Scott said: “If you look at the USA team, a lot of their players are in the latter stages of their careers so I still have a lot to offer especially after this preparation.

“I would say I’m in the best shape I’ve ever been in and I am fully focussed on helping the team win.”
