Welwyn Warriors Lacrosse Club have started their season with two straight victories – the second a storming 11-5 success at home to Bristol Bombers.

It has been a fantastic start for the Premiership newcomers and it followed a 10-8 win at Cambridge on the opening day.

This victory was in doubt until the third quarter when the Warriors pulled away.

John Horbury got Welwyn’s first after a pass from Welsh international Hamish Tiley but the two teams would finish the first quarter level at 2-2, Adam Smith finishing off a fast break in the last few seconds of play to equalise.

Welwyn demonstrated some good quality lacrosse in the second quarter and Dave Groves got his name on the scoresheet twice.

Ollie Abbey and Nick Oxley also joined in the scoring with both firing high quality shots past the Bombers’ keeper and by half-time the Warriors had edged into a 6-4 lead.

A third-quarter hat-trick from Andy Thomas did the damage and one more from Smith stretched the Warriors’ advantage to 10-5.

Abbey’s left-handed rip was Welwyn’s only goal of the fourth quarter as they took their foot off the gas.

Lester Salmins took the man of the match award with a fine display as long stick midfielder.

A spokesman for the club said: “The team made a coordinated effort, everyone played together and we have real signs of becoming a high quality team.

“Though we all agree that this team still has so much more to give, it is a great start for us and we look forward to pushing up the South England Men’s Lacrosse Association (SEMLA) Premiership.”

Welwyn’s 2nd team did not fare as well unfortunately, losing 15-2 away to Purley Lacrosse.

That said captain Rob Ingham-Clark was impressed by some areas of his team’s play, notably the performance of man of the match Tish Panglose.

The 2nds are also in a new division having been promoted last season and are working hard to improve.
