NORTH Mymms Bowls Club's ladies played their first major competition of the season against Rowley Lane on Saturday morning.

However, the Welham Greeners' hopes of success in the County Top Ten competition are over after they were defeated 3-1 and by a shots difference of 70-49.

Down in the singles, triples and pairs, Mymms' only success was in the fours with Sue Maynard, Ann Penfold, Rose Parkinson and Delsa Cooper winning 20-18.

In the afternoon, both men and ladies travelled to Northaw & Cuffley for a friendly which was slightly foreshortened in the inclement conditions.

In a clean sweep across the green, the ladies won by 41 shots to 17 and the men 77-57.

Despite dropping a five on the third end, Sue Maynard, Ann Penfold, Shirley Brooker and Joyce Welch romped home 25-9.

Diann Howell, Sylvia Kenyon, Delsa Cooper and Becky Maynard also won 16-8.

For the men, Geoff Matthews, Barry Paine, Derek Hall and Adrian Sherlock finished 20-14 up.

John Penfold, Alan Barth, David Braid and Alan Howell won 19-14.

Martin Barson, Alf Valentine, Bob Fowler and Tony Wordsworth won by five shots.

Dave Marlborough, Peter Kenyon, Graham Lamb and Jack Herbert completed a good team performance with a 17-13 victory.
