ATHLETES figured strongly in the list of Sports Person of the Year nominees this year.

No less than five of the 10 candidates came from track and field, four of them being members of Club of the Year Herts Phoenix.

Elizabeth Brathwaite, from Hatfield, was a front-runner for the individual accolade at the borough's annual sporting get together.

She won an European U23 silver medal in the 1,500m on the track last year.

WGC girls Katie Caulfield and Jodie Williams were also put forward for the award.

Sprinter Williams was crowned English Schools' U15 100m champion last summer and claimed a sprint double at the National Championships.

Monk's Walk School pupil Caulfield, meanwhile, excelled at the long jump.

Club colleague Richard Humphries, a pupil at Sir Frederic Osborn, was also nominated for his achievements in the hammer circle in his first season at the discipline, as well as his exploits on the rugby field.

Budding hurdler Thomas Neill was also put forward by his training group at the Copthall Stadium.

Welwyn Warriors U18 rugby captain Hannah Gallagher impressed judges with both her ability and dedication to battle back from serious injury.

Jigar Mehta's record 65 league wickets for Hatfield Crusaders at an average of 7.26 also won a nomination.

Mill Green golfer Babs Gaskell and teenage sailor Michael Perham completed the list of candidates.
