TOM Pettet hit 79 runs but it wasn't enough as WGC fell to a five-wicket defeat at home to Luton Town & Indians.

WGC batted first against their Bedfordshire opposition in this Saracens Herts Cricket League Division Two tie, and despite once again looking good, lost Matt Hill early on.

Andy Nolan and Chris Molyneux put on 50 for the second wicket until Nolan was unfortunately run out for 29.

This brought Pettet to the crease but he was losing partners rapidly and in no time WGC were five wickets down.

Chris Stainsby joined Pettet, and the pair put on 70 for the sixth wicket until Pettet was bowled for 79.

The innings lost momentum soon after the dismissal of talisman Pettet and WGC were all out for a disappointing 184.

WGC bowled tightly early on but it was wickets that were needed.

However, despite going close and bagging a couple, the Digswell Park club found Luton needing 40 from the last 10 overs with eight wickets left.

The introduction of Stainsby (3-13) caused a bit of panic in the dressing room but it was too little, too late as Luton cruised home.

Next up for WGC 2nds is a tie away to strugglers Northwood.
